Capita shortlisted as finalist in the European IT & Software Excellence Awards
Capita Managed IT Solutions has been shortlisted as a finalist in the European IT and Software Awards 2017.
Now in their 9th year, the 2017 awards attracted more than 500 entries and are awarded to companies with IT solutions that get to the heart of customer issues, deliver a better service, a clearer understanding of data, and more efficient and profitable outcomes. Capita has been shortlisted as one of eight finalists for the category ‘ISV Solution - Software Innovation Solution of the Year,’ detailing Capita’s NewsDesk service.
Capita entered the awards for their NewsDesk service, a communications website used by teachers and pupils in primary and post-primary schools throughout Northern Ireland. The site offers pupils and teachers an innovative and interactive platform to develop language and literacy skills acting as a topical news and curriculum resource. There is also an Irish language version available known as Seomra Nuachta, the first Irish language platform of this type developed to meet the unique needs of Irish language schools. It is accessed via My-School, Capita’s online learning portal which is available to all students and teachers, using individual logins and passwords. When accessed, users are taken to the Front Page where the latest stories and curriculum focussed news is displayed. Users can then navigate to a number of feature sections that include:-
- Newsbank – a categorised archive of news articles posted onto the site
- News in Pictures/Videos – media based news articles
- Competitions – regularly updated to encourage participation
- Fact Files – collection of education material on key subjects
- Puzzles & Games – educational games that are fun and engaging
- School Reporter – to allow users, teachers and pupils alike, to be the reporter and submit stories that will be published on the NewsDesk
Ed Brown, Managing Director of Capita Managed IT Solutions, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted as a finalist in the European IT & Software Excellence Awards. We’re proud of the NewsDesk software and platform which helps to drive a better understanding of current affairs and increases literacy standards across learners in Northern Ireland. Provided as part of the Education Network Northern Ireland contract with C2k, all students in Northern Ireland schools have 24/7 access to important news stories, videos and podcasts.”
Tim Matchett, EA Head of C2k Managed Services, said: “The NewsDesk service is a great resource for school children to engage in local, national and international news stories and also create their own content whilst improving literacy skills. We are delighted with the success of the NewsDesk solution and have had a fantastic response from schools on the service. We are delighted Capita has been chosen as a finalist. This is a testament to the solution we provide to all schools in Northern Ireland.”
Speaking about using the NewsDesk service, Mrs Kelly, Reporting, Recording and Assessment co-ordinator from St Dallan’s Primary School, Warrenpoint said: “We have been using the Newsdesk since it was launched and my class absolutely love it. It is the launch pad for so many discussions and a springboard for research and reporting. We love the competitions too. Many of my pupils write more on the Newsdesk than they do in their classwork books! We would be lost without it!”
