About Newham College  

Newham Further Education College is located in the London Borough of Newham. The main site is in East Ham with a further site in Stratford incorporating a Higher Education Centre and six learning centres located in the East London area, including the world renowned Fashion and Textile Museum at Tower Bridge.

The college educates more than 12,000 students and has over 500 staff members working across all sites, delivering a range of courses for school leavers and adult learners, including professional and career progression courses. Through Newham College University Centre, the college offers a programme of higher education courses.

IT Partnership

Capita Managed IT Solutions has been Newham College’s trusted IT partner since 2010. Capita delivers an ICT Managed Service to the College, and has designed and implemented various IT infrastructure projects to enhance the learning experience of students, drive cost efficiencies, and support the College’s vision.

Delivering a Reliable IT Environment

Capita delivers a complete ICT Managed Service to Newham College. Having this in place means Capita takes care of all aspects of the ICT service and allows the college leadership team to focus on delivering the college strategy and vision.

The Managed Service includes:

  • Remote monitoring and management of the college network infrastructure, servers and hardware. Capita ensures incidents are alerted and resolved before affecting the college.

  • Access to Capita’s regional Technical Engineers for escalated issues or additional support for the on-site technical team.

  • Access to Capita’s Service Desk for reporting any IT issues and use of the online Capita Service Desk to view and track progress.

  • A dedicated point of contact for reviews, advice and planning.

  • Service management and report development against SLA’s and projects.

    Enhancing the College’s IT Infrastructure

    Capita has supported Newham with the delivery of a number of IT infrastructure and development projects. These have been completed to extend the use of the existing IT infrastructure in a cost efficient way in order to empower learners and deliver a collaborative learning space. The IT Infrastructure Projects include:

  • A complete wireless refresh – this was delivered across all sites, future proofing the wireless capability college wide. The refresh is supporting the college to deliver their BYOD strategy and prepare for future increases in the number of student and staff devices. The refresh has resulted in a consistent wireless experience for students and staff in every site and reduces any disruption of access to learning resources and use of technology in the classroom.

  • A Windows 10 rollout - completed for desktop devices used by the college senior management team and in specialist IT suites. Windows 10 has delivered enhanced security on the college devices and provided access to educational apps including college Office 365 email. In addition Windows 10 has offered the latest technology platform for collaboration and engagement of students.

  • An Office 365 (O365) migration project was delivered by Capita to support the college to provide a collaborative email and communication tool. The College’s staff and student mailbox and calendar were moved to O365 and the College uses SharePoint to share and collaborate on documents. The project involved synchronisation and migration of the colleges Active Directory, cloud server installation and testing. Having access to email in the cloud means the college is benefitting from anytime, anywhere access to learning and unlimited personal storage per user.

  • A Mobile Device Management solution supports the College to enable students to use their own devices in a secure way, delivering access to the college network and learning resources. It further supports the college in delivering their BYOD strategy and offers the ability to embrace new ways of learning in a safe and controlled way, complying with their security policies.  

  • A secure web filtering solution has been implemented across all of the college sites, ensuring they have an up to date and feature rich solution that focuses on staying safe online. The filtering solution means the college can easily define robust filter policies to block malicious or harmful websites, file types and other web content; protecting students, staff and the college network. With a set of reporting functionalities that provide a high level overview on web activity and full user reports, the college leadership team has access to detailed information to monitor and review online behaviour.

 Professional development training programme  

Capita’s training team worked with the college to develop an ICT training programme to meet their needs and drive professional development. With a programme of training developed, the courses are being delivered as group sessions on-site, specific to the college needs including courses on using Office 365, SharePoint and Windows 10. The training is helping the college staff to achieve outstanding practice and develop staff skills in the use of digital learning tools to create interactive content.

Adding value to the student experience

As part of the IT partnership with Newham College, Capita is dedicated to supporting the achievement of its students. During 2016, 28 students from Newham worked with Capita during their work experience across various functions, and Capita has been named by students as the most requested employer for work experience. Each year Capita sponsor an award as part the College’s Shining Stars ceremony, which celebrates the colleges’ most outstanding students.
