Aldborough E-ACT Free School

About the school

Opening its doors in September 2011 with a total of 120 pupils in Reception and Year 1, the school will continue to admit 60 pupils each year until 2016.

E-ACT, the parent organisation to the E-ACT Free Schools Trust, is responsible for developing a range of free schools and academies across England; and is helping to provide the highest possible standard of education in the Redbridge area through the opening of the Free School, as well as meeting the demand for school places within the local authority.

The school is located in a former community centre and following contract sign in July 2011, a challenging timeline was set to ensure the school was ready to open its doors in September. Capita worked closely with E-ACT Free Schools Trust, building contractors and the project management team to design a technology solution which meets the immediate needs of the school and which can be increased in scale as the school grows. Capita ensured that the IT was installed and fully operational for opening on 1st September 2011.

The ICT Service

Capita have provided and support netbooks for use in the classroom, PC's for administration staff, interactive whiteboards, printers, server infrastructure and access to Capita's Central Service Desk for support calls. A member of the Capita team is also on-site 1 day per week to provide further support.

The interactive whiteboards are height adjustable to allow the students to engage fully with the curriculum software. Laptop trolleys used for charging and storing the school netbooks also have low heights to enable students to access the laptops easily. Capita provided training for teaching and non-teaching staff before the school opened and have continued to work creatively and effectively with the senior leadership team to offer focussed support during a period of great challenge.

Future vision

Capita is currently increasing the support levels to provide a full managed service. Aldborough E-ACT Free School can draw on Capita's skills and experience to ensure the technology environment continues to support the school's vision for teaching and learning and is reliable, stable and available where and when it is needed.

The school are also moving to a Managed Print Service to minimise the environmental impact and cost of printing. The new solution will enable the school to monitor and manage printing requirements and levels, and improve the security of printing confidential information.

Phase Two of the school build project is due for completion on 1st September 2012, with a further floor of the building being refurbished and new school buildings (2 new purpose built Early Years Classrooms) opening for the next intake. Capita will continue to work with E-ACT Free Schools Trust to ensure smooth implementation of ICT.
